SING YOUR SPIRIT
Lessons in Mindfulness in Community Music Making
Jon Kabat Zinn, esteemed writer, teacher and creator of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society, describes mindfulness as “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.”
We will bring this quality of attention to our time together and experience the connection between being present, without judgment, in singing and making music in community. We will explore music improvisation as a way to experience the present moment, and sing several songs from the “Basket of Plums,” the songbook of the Thich Nhat Hahn Buddhist tradition. The songs capture the wisdom and teachings of this master teacher and advocate for peace. They are simple, beautiful songs and lend themselves to harmonizing.
