Women and Voice

- Music Therapy with Patricia Mulholland, MA, MT-BC, NMT

The Vocal Journey

Our voice and our relationship to it reveal how we think and feel about ourselves and impact how we are perceived by others.  In my experience in the clinical and community setting as a music therapist, as well as in the corporate/academic sector leading Leadership Presence programs, I have witnessed many women struggle with vocal problems. Confidence and endurance suffer and can feed a “less than” sense of self. Hindered by a reluctance to speak up, a disconnection of voice from one’s breath and body, and blockages related to life story are among the challenges that vocal music therapy can address.  In my work with women I invite them to bring curiosity, courage, commitment, and compassion, as we work together to discover the voice as:
  • A container of physical, emotional and psychological energy
  • An instrument connecting our breath, body and imagination
  • A reflection of the depth of our intentions
  • A representation of our credibility and authenticity
Techniques include bodywork, vocalizing, improvisation, singing and working with text. Individual work takes place in my studio. Group work is offered in workshop and retreat settings and can be customized to meet the needs of a particular group.

Coming Home to Voice;
Coming Home to Self

We come into this world making sound – the purest of cries, announcing to the world, “ I am here.”  How this “I am here” plays out throughout our life over the years creates a tapestry of story and sound.

My particular “I am here” story is that of a bright, creative little girl in a vibrant middle class family that tumbled when I was a pre-teen.   Loss and trauma darkened my capacity for joy for many years.   But the drive within to recover my creative self was strong and persistent and led me to a career of using the arts as a vehicle of transformation, for myself and for others.  The vocation of wounded healer called me.

One of my early voice teachers, Merita Gunter of the Roy Hart Theatre, described the human voice as “the mirror and the muscle of the soul.”  My encounter in my early 30s with Merita and other distinguished teachers of the RHT changed my life.  I had already encountered the work of Carl Jung and was committed to a journey toward individuation.  A deep exploration of my voice offered an experiential path toward individuation -- toward healing and wholeness in both therapeutic and artistic ways.  Thus, my interest and expertise in working with women and voice comes from a deep place within.

“BE YOUR NOTE”

– Rumi

Remember the lips where wind-breath

originated, and let your note be clear.

Don’t try to end it.

Be your note.

I’ll show you how it’s enough.

Go up on the roof at night

in this city of the soul.

Let everyone climb on their roofs

and sing their notes.

Sing loud!

“Be Your Note” Music Therapy Services represents my life purpose of using my artistry in service of the growth and healing of others.   Whether working with people in a wellness or a clinical setting, I deeply believe that music therapy can facilitate one’s ability to experience health and a fullness of being while connecting deeply with one’s self and others.

What My Clients Say:

"A voice tremor, an added aggravation to the aging process, can be demeaning and embarrassing.  It can fade in importance to become an occasional nuisance and even a source of humor.  Working with Patricia helped me to do just that, and in the process I found “my note.”  I was surprised to discover that I could sing.

Patricia hears, understands, and begins therapy where the voice is.  The tremor will probably not go away as it is organic; but I have learned to work around it.  I no longer apologize for the tremor.  I speak out and open my mouth to sing.  Patricia is a gifted therapist who uses music as a tool for healing and growth.  She is genuine, positive and has an inspiring spiritual energy."
